Ever since the early 50s, Lexington's economy has increasingly become a manufacturing, technology-oriented, and university oriented economy. Because of the 3 public universities, 5 private colleges, and 2 theological seminaries that are located within Lexington, they also provide for Lexington's economy. In addition, the city plays an important part in the region as being the leading medical and commercial center.
Lexington is home to several large corporations. There are two Fortune 500 companies that are located here: Affiliated Computer Services and Lexmark International. United Parcel Service, Trane and Amazon.com, Inc. also harbor in the city. The Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky is also in Lexington. The city also, interestingly enough, has a Jif peanut butter plant that produces more peanut butter than any other factory in the world.
